My Review

I love books that have feel-good endings. It’s not always common to find children’s books that teach old-fashioned kindness. This book allows a parent to share with their child that doing the right thing can have wonderful consequences.

This book follows Evan as he flies away from his parents to attend a boarding school. He moved into his new bedroom that contained two bunk beds, and he met his roommates.

In his drawer he placed a little box for his money. His father had promised that he could get a new red bike if he saved his money. He was careful to skip all the temptations to buy candy with his coins. Even when his money was lost he didn’t give up. He saved again and had a full box of coins.

One day the boys were hiking with their dorm supervisor and a friend fell in quicksand. They worked hard and pulled him out, but the boys shoes were gone. His friend only had one pair of shoes, so now he was walking barefoot. What would Evan do? Did he make a selfless choice or go home to buy his bike?

I’m very pleased to recommend this book, with it’s lovely illustrations and great moral lesson.
